3 Beauty Products we Really Rate

Back in August, Frillseeker's Kirstie very kindly asked us to contribute to a piece for Frillseeker on products that Irish beauty bloggers really rate. The brief asked us to pick three items, so Mags and I decided that they had to be products that we both agreed on, which was actually quite difficult! So we deliberated and sent emails back and forth and wrote a short piece about it and then didn't email it to Kirstie. I thought Mags was doing it and she thought I was doing it.

Doh, worst bloggers eva.

Anyway, rather than let it go to waste, here it is: 3 products both of us really rate :-)

We are huge fans of NYC Cosmetics - their products have shown us that you can get some really good affordable cosmetics. These tinted balms will cost you less than a latte and are handbag essentials as far as we`re concerned. How cute is the apple shaped core?

Orofluido
Orofluido is a pretty amazing hair oil, it's like Moroccan Oil but more affordable and it lasts forever. We always have a bottle of this on hand  - it minimises spilt ends, speeds up hair drying time and leaves a subtle fragrance in the hair. Sure what more could you want.

Clarins Instant Eye Make Up Remover
If you had told us that we would be spending €20+ on eye make up remover, we would have said you were crazy but we have really taken to this Clarins offering. Removes the heaviest eye make up effortlessly with no rubbing or dragging. It even takes off Benefit`s They`re Real mascara which, if you've ever used it, will agree is no easy feat.

Lancome Advanced Genifique

My name is Mags and I am somewhat of a peter pan type character, I am immature ill admit it and I think that that laughing keeps you young.  In saying that I am merging into the Maggie May from the Rod Stewart song - yeah unfortunately "the morning sun when its in my face really shows my age" definitely around my eyes which is a bummer cause nobody wants a wrinkly Peter Pan.

This wilting fairy thought that Advanced Genifique* sounded like the kinda fairy dust that will sort out some fine lines and return a youthful glow to my face.

So I can talk about the science (Advanced Genifique has 40% more active ingredients than original Genifique - it works by copying your skins genes and how they replicate and rejuvenate.  There are also  ingredients like Adenosine which improves the structure of the skin, Yeast Extract and Vitamin CG but I am going to start veering towards Leaving Cert Biology if I keep talking about it).

Right I am not going to blind you with science because quite frankly I will just end up confused but what I do want to talk to you about is how Advanced Genifique actually works.  You dispense the product from a fancy little dropper.  I put the milky serum on the back of my hand and would apply it in upwards motions over my face.  Because we actually had a summer this year I noticed that my hand had picked up some colour, it was brown and dried out and basically looked a little old.  After I applied the serum to my face I would rub the back of my hands against each other so as not to waste any of the precious product.  After about 2 weeks I noticed that my hand returned to normal and looked healthy and young again - it suprised me how soft and healthy my hands looked (I had not used any other product on my hands).  So it might sound a little weird but I noticed the effects of the serum on my hands before I noticed on my face.

On my face I noticed that the laughter lines which spread from my eyes to the top of my cheeks had minimised (I still have lines at my eyes but I guess Lancome need and Advanced Genifique eye cream for me).  I have been using Advanced Genifique all summer and its probably one of the only skincare products I have used constantly.  While its not going to give you a face lift in a bottle Advanced Genifique is a little bottle of magical potion.  I am feeling a little more like my normal Peter Pan self.
Most of the time I felt that the serum on its own was enough moisturiser for my combination skin especially during the summer months when my skin was acting up, for a bit of added sun protection during the summer months I was also using Lancome's UV Expert GN Sheild which has SPF 50.

Advanced Genifique is available now and costs €73.00 which is a massive investment so I would pick it up when there is a gift with purchase or some other special offer on - everybody loves a gift with purchase.

Sleek I-Divine Vintage Romance Palette

Sleek make great and affordable eye shadow palettes and their new offering the Vintage Romance Palette* is absolutely beautiful.  This palette has already featured in my September favourites. It is so pretty and like all Sleek palettes, has soft buttery shadows that are highly pigmented.

The palette has 12 shadows, the top row featuring some of the prettiest wearable colours and the shade at the top right I have used as a blush.  The bottom row is the "party row" featuring a range of pretty purples and shades that will add drama to any look and will be perfect for the Christmas Party season (oops I just said Christmas).  Speaking of Christmas I think this would make a perfect Christmas present (I have just the person in mind).

The colours are all named after cities which is a cute feature.  My favourite colours have been Meet in Madrid, Court in Cannes and Lust in LA which is my hands down soft favourite antique gold shade.

My Favourite shade from the bottom row is Bliss in Barcelona. It has almost a duo toned effect and I have been using it as a liner with neutral eyes.

During the Summer I wasn't using eyeshadow - I was sticking with eye shadow sticks but the Sleek Vintage Romance Palette is so pretty it has tempted me back into eye shadow.  Although, I haven't been breaking out the party shades just yet but they will look stunning on the eyes.  Since I have been kind of lazy lately with my eye shadows I have been sticking to simple looks.

I think what is most amazing about Sleek Palettes is the price - €9.99 - yep for less than a tenner you get 12 eyeshadows.  I think it' s phenomenal value.  Sleek is available from Cloud 10 Beauty (here). You know that we are huge fans of Cloud 10 - last order I made I got a free travel size Sigma brush, how brilliant is that? Keep an eye out for special offers and discounts.

Dr Ceuticals Firm & Sculpt Arm Gel

For me, if I was to swap body parts with Jennifer Aniston I wouldn't go with the hair (although her hair is fab and I do tend to veer towards a similar colour). I know its a shocker, but what I really envy about Jennifer Aniston is her arms.  Man that lady has some fab arms, they are toned and sleek but most importantly they are feminine.  Sweet baby Jesus some muscly women's arms scare the life out of me.

So when I'm doing hard arm exercises (don't laugh, sometimes I do) I repeat to myself "Jennifer Aniston Arms, this will give you Jennifer Aniston Arms" slightly unhinged but definitely a good motivator.  Of course I realise I am not going to have Jennifer Aniston arms anytime soon but I do like to take every measure to speed up the process.  As you can imagine when I heard of Dr. Ceuticals Firm & Sculpt Arm Gel* I was all over it.  A product which firms and sculpts your arms?  Count me in.

Firm & Sculpt is a gel with a slight medicinal scent and they tell you to rub the cream into your arms every morning and evening.  I can do that.  For the last couple of weeks I have been using it (so most days I manage it once, some days not at all and once or twice I have managed twice a day) and although I have not reached Jennifer Aniston arm status I have noticed a bit of an improvement.  It takes only a second to rub the gel into the skin and it absorbs very quickly, I only use this on my upper arms.

I moisturise my body every other day, I am not obsessive about it but I do like to rub some cream on my skin and if you suffer from dry skin you really should moisturise so using an arm cream is not a hassle for me.  My skin is for the most part soft but I do have problem areas.  What I have really noticed after using Firm & Sculpt is how soft my arms are - really soft.  If you suffer at all from Keratosis pilaris - those bumps on the back of your arm - I would highly recommend Firm & Sculpt Arm Gel. Although my arms didn't have bad bumps there were some there and they are all gone now.  My arms are so soft I find myself rubbing them in disbelief as if they are somebody else's arm.   Firm & Sculpt doesn't advertise that it helps KP but it definitely does.

I don't think any cream is going to drastically change the tone of your arms but if you use a product in conjunction with exercise it definitely helps.  So are my arms like Jennifer Aniston's?  Mmm... no, but they are definitely a lot prettier than before I used Firm & Sculpt.

Firm & Sculpt costs €20.39 and is available from www.drceuticals.co.uk and Boots.  Dr Ceuticals also have a Bust Boost which sounds very interesting and I will definitely give that a try and let you know how I get on.

Redken Diamond Oil - Shatterproof Shine

So we are great lovers of hair oil and my favourite for a long time has been Orifluido for two reasons
1. it's less expensive than Moroccan oil
2. it's a lighter oil than Moroccan oil

So for a long time Orifluido has been a firm favourite of mine even though I get to laugh when my Mam gets confused and calls Moroccan oil - Brazilian oil (I think she is getting her hair treatments confused).

Personally I think when the oil is lighter it spreads through the hair better and while I am not great at using products on my hair I always use a hair oil on my hair after I wash it.

Redken have a new offering in the mix called Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine*.  Redken have developed 2 versions of the oil, the first one is in an Amber bottle which is for fine hair and an alternative for thick coarse hair which is in a black bottle.  If you think you can't use hair oil if you have fine hair, you can just use a smaller amount and now Redken have a oil specifically for your hair type.   I have a lot of hair so I went with the black bottle.

Diamond Oil is a lighter oil than any other hair oil I have used.  It comes in a very swanky bottle which dispenses the product through a dropper.  As I said the oil is more watery than other hair oils which means that it spreads through wet hair easily and you have less chance of overloading the hair with product (which is going to make the hair oily and not what you're going for).

While other hair oils are dependent on argan oil, Diamond Oil cleverly mixes a trio of oils - Coriander Oil (smooths),  Camelina Oil (softens) and   Apricot Oil (conditions).  I have tried the Ojon Rare Blend Hair oil which also mixes different oils and my hair HATED it - my hair was oily, flat and limp.  Diamond Oil is light and glides thought your hair, you would have to use a lot of it to weigh down the hair and even if you're feeling heavy handed the dropper means the amount of product you dispense is measured.

As with other hair oils you can use this on hair after you wash it, on dry hair to give it gloss and even as a treatment before you wash your hair.

Diamond Oil is really a pleasure to use - except when you're like me and forget to close the top of the bottle and then drop the bottle on the ground (the shape of the bottle meant that thankfully not a lot came out) but I found myself soaking my hair on the ground like Homer Simpson, it's not every product that would find me on my hands and knees and mopping it up with my hair.  My hair oil mess ended up being quite a nice pre-wash treatment.

Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine costs €33.95 (less expensive than Moroccan Oil) and is available from Redken Salons and stockists. Pin It

Sleek Face Form in Fair

Sleek are kinda genius when it comes to makeup, not only do they give us great value makeup but some of it is really outstanding.  I am a big fan of their eye palettes and their blush.  I was intrigued to try out face form which is a contouring and blush palette.

The Face Form Palette comes in 4 shades (Fair, Light, Medium and Dark)  I picked up Fair which I thought was the most suiting to me and to be honest the prettiest.  I have never really contoured before, I never felt the need for it because of my razor sharp cheekbones and all (just checking to see if you're paying attention).   Since my cheeks tend to veer towards chipmunk I thought I should give easy contouring a shot.

The handy palette has a matte brown, a shimmery pearl to highlight and a rose gold blush colour.  It's very pretty don't you think?

The brown colour is very natural and not at all muddy which was a big fear for me about contouring, it's simple to use and blends easily.  The highlight colour is so pretty and makes a quick and simple highlight.  I love the blush colour, it's a dupe for Nars Orgasm but there is quite a bit of shimmer in it and I think they would have been better off with a less shimmery colour blush in the trio.  There is no need for shimmer in the blush when the highlighter has beautiful shimmer to it.  I do like to use the blush on its own but with the highlighter it's a little too much.  I think it makes a beautiful blush but I wouldn't use both the blush and highlighter together.

You can pick up a Sleek Face Form Palette from the wondrous Cloud 10 Beauty (here)  where they cost €12.99.  As you know we are huge fans of Cloud 10 Beauty because its the quickest gratification online shopping has ever given us - yes their shipping is amazing and they give you free samples, AND if you sign up to their Facebook page (here) you can get special offers and promotions.

The Body Shop Colour Crush Lipsticks

The Body Shop do body lotions and that's it right?  Wrong.  While I am a bit of a body butter expert (nothing moisturises your shins like it), I am not very familiar with cosmetics from the Body Shop.  The Body Shop's latest cosmetic release is their Colour Crush Lipsticks - exactly my kinda product.

Colour Crush lipstick give high impact colour while also being moisturising with a delicate rose scent.  There are 24 colours in the range and they are broken up into three groupings - nudes, pinks and reds.  Today I have two of the reds and a pink to show you.

The packaging reflects the shade range of the lippy (nude, pink or red) which makes them bright and pretty to look at.  The colour shade and number is written on the outer sticker of the lipstick but unfortunately only the number is written on the base - not a big deal to most people, probably just a blogger gripe.

The lipstick is moisturising but not overly so which is good for pigmented colour, it means the lipstick is comfortable on the lips but will not slide down your face.

First up is Red Siren - 101*  it's my favourite shade of the three - a perfect classic red.

Sexy Crimson - 125* is a vampy wine/red colour, perfect for a bit of drama.

Rush of Pink- 230* a light delicate pink - not something I would normally gravitate towards (it's more a Sile colour) but the milky pink shade is fully opaque.
My face looks a little washed out in this lighting

Colour Crush Lipsticks are a great range of affordable lipsticks and the range means there is a nude, red and pink to suit everybody.

Red Siren, Sexy Crimson and Rush of Pink

The Body Shop Colour Crush Lipsticks are available now and cost €12.95.  There are a couple of hot pink colours calling my name.  Ill see you at the Body Shop. Pin It
