Cloud 10 Beauty and the Balm - Really testing my spending ban

So I have been a good girl with regard to this spending ban - just looking at blogs and new collections but not really feeling a bad urge to spend.  I was quite proud of myself.  That was until I got an email from Cloud 10 Beauty.

Cloud 10 Beauty are my favourite online beauty shop, not only do they offer brands that I wouldn't easily get my hands on, they also have very quick shipping, they give free samples which are just delightful (especially delightful cause this spending ban makes samples look like Christmas day).  So not only do they have all these wonderful things to offer they are also now stocking The Balm cosmetics.  As I said last week I REALLY REALLY want (I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want) Mary Lou Manizer and I have for quite a while (it's supposed to be a knock your socks off kind of highlighter) so now it's so close to me with Cloud 10 it's extra tempting.   Cloud 10 Beauty also have the new rose gold toned highlighter in stock Cindy- Lou Manizer

Is it wrong that I would also quite like to look like Mary Lou or Cindy Lou?

OK but hold it right there just a darn tootin second - for a limited time with the purchase of 2 The Balm products you get a free trial kit of  3 The Balm minis.  This is while stocks last - please last until shopping ban is over, pretty please-.
I have also heard great things about the blush Frat Boy and also the Meet Matt Nude Palette - so basically when this spending ban is over I will be all over The Balm
So Cloud 10 are spoiling us with The Balm but they also have the new Sleek collection and will soon have the new Tanya Burr (of YouTube fame) Lip glosses and Nail Varnishes.   Ahh Cloud 10 you're really testing me with your wonderful products. Pin It

Wet and Wild - It's in Ireland now don't ya know

Hi Peeps - so unless you have been living in a bomb shelter hiding from an impending Zombie Apocalypse (ok I might be completely stuck into Annie Wall's books at the moment) you will know by now that the US brand Wet and Wild has hit Dunnes Stores.  That's right while you're doing your weekly shop you can slip in some cosmetics.

Wet and Wild's brand ambassador is Fergie - in America she has limited edition collections, I am not sure if they will be making their way to us but the brand still has plenty to offer.  I have been lucky enough to try some Wet and Wild products over the years and for me the hits are the eye shadows and the blushes.

The packaging as you can imagine isn't the fanciest known to the makeup world and the description of where you put the shadows can be a bit childish (I'm a grown ass woman, don't you tell me where to put makeup) but lets remember that the eyeshadow trios cost €3.99 and for that you get some soft and pigmented shadow.

Since I am on a spending ban Sile picked up an eyeshadow trio and a single shadow (single shadows cost €1.99).  The Wet and Wild Stands have testers which is fantastic you can see the quality before you buy.  I am not sure if its all the pink toned eyeshadow hype from the Naked 3 palette but Sile picked out the trio in "I'm Getting Sunburned" and the single in "Nutty".

Although I personally don't use the applicators in palettes the Wet and Wild palette has a sponge applicator and a tiny brush, a nice option at any price point but especially nice at €3.99 - and really good if you're just starting out with makeup.

As you can see from the testers in the shop you get soft eyeshadow which is really pigmented.  Below are just one swipe of the shadows, I think you will agree its impressive.

Next up is Nutty, the single shadow - its a staple in most American makeup bags (along with the cream shadow Brulee).  If you like brown/taupe shades this is the shadow for you.

I thought I would show you one of my much loved Wet and Wild products - the blush in Pearlescent Pink which is a ringer for Nars Orgasm.  I got this when I was in America a couple of years ago and I went straight back and picked one up for my BFF and for Sile.

So what is I'm Getting Sunburned like on the eyes?  I used the pink over the whole eye with the copper on the lid and the brown as a liner (I'm not one to follow rules even if they are embossed on a shadow).    So although I can't afford the rose gold pink tones of the Naked 3  I am loving the effect of I'm Getting Sumburned.

So will you be putting some Wet and Wild in your shopping basket?  I love the fact I can save my Dunnes points while buying makeup :) Pin It

My Spending Ban Wish List - Collaboration with Lovely Girlie Bits

Remember before Christmas I went a bit mad buying makeup ? Well I am kinda paying for that now (when I say kinda, I mean the bill literally arrived in the post).  Hoarder shame and circumstance means I have to take a break from spending.  Along with my "makeup hoarder in crime" Karen from Lovely Girlie Bits we decided we needed to take a break from spending until March.  If you are feeling the post Christmas fear you are more than welcome to join us as we try and become responsible members of the community (and not hide at the mere mention of the bank).

Of course just because we are not spending money doesn't mean that new products don't catch our eye.  Myself and Karen decided that instead of going on (and on... and on some more) about products to each other we would both do wishlist posts and then in March see what still tickles our fancy.  I am the kinda gal who loves spring and summer, so as you can imagine spring and summer make up collections tend to make my heart flutter a wee bit more.  Below are some items that I have been drooling over.

1. First up is Charlotte Tilbury Bar of Gold - I am a little obsessed with highlighters at the moment and think that this looks beautiful.  I am very keen (I am trying to make myself sound calm and collected rather than somebody who looses their mind over makeup) to try out some of Charlotte Tilbury's products.

2.  You didn't think I would be going anywhere without mentioning Stila's spring offering.  First up  are the smudge sticks which are being released in a mind blowing 22 shades (we may not get all 22 shades over this side of the Atlantic), so many amazing shades to choose from.  I am a huge fan of Stila smudge sticks, they are my Holy Grail eye liner, they are just so easy to use with great results so I will definitely be picking up one or two of these limited shades.

3. Smashbox Always Sharp 3d Liners   I had a little play with these in Boots recently and they look amazing.  These wind up pencils have a shapener in the lid so when you put the lid back on, BAM perfectly shaped eyeliner.  Simple and clever - just the way I like it.

4.  Nars NARSissist Eye Palette  (check out Temptalia's post about it).  I have a bit of a Love/Hate relationship with Nars, I really LOVE some of their products and some are a huge disappointment to me.  I don't know if this appeals to me because one of my first Nars purchases was a face and eye palette of a similar design in Saks Fifth Avenue on my very first trip to New York (many MANY years ago) or I am just greedy and love the idea of lots of shades altogether.  I did see a review on You Tube that said the quality of the shadows was not as good as the NARS singles or doubles so I might need to see it in the flesh.

5.  Smashbox Full Exposure Palette I think that this is shaping up to be the palette of the year, it's just so beautiful and the idea of it has been making me drool. 7 Shimmery Shades and 7 matt shades of makeup perfection.  Smashbox eye shadows are my Holy Grail shadow so this is a bit of a no brainer.  If you want to look at the palette in greater detail head over and look at Karen's post (here) .  You kinda want it now too don't you.

6. Stila again :) not only have Stila added some shades to the (spendy but fabulous) Magnificent Metal Eye Foils but they have also created Magnificent Metals Eye Liners.  This makes me very happy.  They are pretty and fabulous, so what a pretty darn fabulous Spring launch.

7.Charlotte Tilbury Eyeshadow Palette in The Dolce Vita - Just watch this video by Charlotte on You Tube and tell me you don't want this sleek palette.   I think this is different than any other palette I own but I am also aware I have 3 eye shadow palettes in this wish list.

8. NYC Twistable Intense Lip Color - I Love NYC for affordable lip products and these little beauties should be hitting our shelves in April (plenty of time for my shopping ban to be over) they are so affordable that I could pretty much pick up every one in the collection for the same price as a high end lipstick.  Check out this pic (here) from Noveaucheap to get an idea of shades  I am already a fan of the Ultra Last Lipsticks so I cant wait for these lip crayons to arrive.  I love how easy lip crayons are to use, they are a liner and a lippy in one.  I am even going to pick up some of the nude colours, sure why not.

9. Did  you know The Balm has come to my favourite online beauty shop Cloud 10 Beauty ?  I have been longing for Mary Lou Manizer (here) for such a long time (and I hear that Cloud 10 Beauty will be getting Cindy Lou,  a rose gold version in stock soon).  This beautiful champagne highlighter is supposed to be the bomb (excuse the pun) and now that it will be easily available to us Irish gals and Cloud 10 have very quick delivery so it's practically the instant gratification that you get from going into the shop.  (Can you tell I like highlighters yet?).

10.  Of course I have to save a chunk of funds for the launch of Tarte Cosmetics by QVCUK.COM I love Tarte Cosmetics and cant wait to dip my toe into QVC (which also happens to stock Stila) by picking up some of Tarte's special value sets.  Tarte will launch fully in March but so far QVC have a lip gloss set that you can get your hands on until the launch (here).

So if you have any of these products I would love to hear your advice on what I should buy and what I should leave behind.

If you want to head over to Lovely Girlie Bits and see what Karen has put on her wish list for March click here.

Favourite Things of 2013

We are probably a little behind on this post but we thought you might like to know some of our favorite things (who is singing like Maria from a Sound of Music after that?  I know I am) from 2013.

We can't really talk about 2013 without talking about the Cocoa Brown Tan range and its powerhouse creator Marissa Carter.  Marissa took an idea of creating a self tanner that took the hassle out of fake tanning. Cocoa Brown develops in 1 - 3 hours,  has a nice scent (and because it develops quickly you don't have the rotten biscuit smell and fake tan outline on your sheets), is a flattering natural shade, is safe for sensitive skin and most importantly is very affordable.  This tan has revolutionised  fake tanning and more than that, we would say it has saved many relationships (hubbies/partners complaining about the complexities of tanning are a thing of the past).  I think Cocoa Brown tan produces a beautifully natural colour that is so flattering on the skin.  I am not a big user of fake tan, it's generally too much faffing around - but Cocoa Brown has changed that.

Marissa Carter wins Irish Start-Up of the Year by IMAGE Magazine

Smashbox Eye Shadows - This year I have had a bit of a love affair with Smashbox - it's a brand that we just really associated with primers and while they do have a primer for possibly every skin type and body part they also have other fantastic products.  This year we have been blown away by the quality of their eye shadows.  Sometimes when brands produce eyeshadow palettes the quality of the shadows may not be as good as the regular shadows or there are a few dodgy shades/textures.  Not so with Smashbox - in some ways I am more obsessed with their limited edition palettes than I am with their trios.  Their spring launch - The Love Me (here) was the palette that really reintroduced us to the brand's eye shadows and they are FANTASTIC.  After a couple of months of wanting the summer palette I finally picked it up and I love it.  I didn't hold off for the Christmas sets, they were mine instantly.  9 out of 10 times I am wearing Smashbox eye shadows and they have quickly become my Holy Grail eyeshadow brand which is high praise indeed.  Not only do I love the texture and the consistency of the shadows (soft like butter but don't drop all over your face) I love the colour combinations.  Smashbox have recently released their Full Exposure palette which looks like a thing of beauty and I will be picking it up when my spending ban is over in March.

My favourite hair treatment of the year was something I picked up on a whim in Boots and it's the Mark Hill MiracOILicious 2 Minute Intensive Treatment.  This is great if your hair is feeling a bit rubbish. It re hydrates and moisturises in no time,  I often leave it in for less than the 2 minutes (if you leave it in for too long your hair could actually be too soft).  I picked this up during the summer when my hair was a dry frizzy mess and it fixed things right up and its still kicking in my bathroom because you only need a tiny amount.

In 2013 I was introduced to the brand Shiseido and I was pretty much blown away.  Their skin care line is amazing (with different ranges for different skin ages and concerns and also different ranges for different budgets) and their colour collection is pretty fantastic too.  I love their eye shadows and I would rate them fairly close to my holy grail Smashbox (their only downfall for me is their sometimes odd colour combinations).  The Perfect Rouge lipsticks are flipping fantastic - I have a red and a pink and they are one of my favourite lip products of the year.  I don't have many posts on the products yet but keep an eye out because they will be coming soon.  I am also obsessed with the Shiseido Foundation Brush.

As you may know I am a massive Stila fan (I may have mentioned it a million times or so). This year has been fantastic because Stila is not only available from Harvey Nicks in Dundrum but also online from Brown Thomas (here) so we can collect our BT loyalty points while shopping for Stila.  This year on my birthday the very lovely Stila people sent me a picture of ME as a Stila girl - can you imagine my excitement?  well multiply it by a million and you will have an idea of how excited I was.  Stila have continued to delight us with innovating products and this year saw the launch of the spendy but exquisite Magnificent Metal foil shadows.

I have never really used a setting powder, I always think they make me look powdery and old.... but that was before Hourglass Ambient Powder.  If I am being honest I went to buy these twice and I walked away confused and underwhelmed.  It's freaking €45 for a powder and I don't even use powder.  When I swatched them I wasn't impressed.  I just didn't get it.  When the Limited Edition trio came out I picked it up and thought, yeah I suppose its kinda pretty on the skin.  Then every time I wore the ambient powders I started to get compliments on how great I looked ?  I didn't really think I looked great or any different than normal and the only thing different in my routine was the ambient powders.  The powders make you look like you're sitting in a certain kind of "ambient" light, for instance incandescent, radiant and dim light are in the palette.  I am sold on the ambient powders and although I have a trio and don't need another I will definitely be picking more up.  Who doesn't want to look incandescent?

Trish McEvoy Makeup Planner might be a bit spendy but it sure is the chicest way to carry your makeup around.  While this petite planner is a little too big for me to lug around in my handbag everyday, it's perfect for a weekend away or to tuck away in your drawer at work.

I almost forget about Lancome Teint Visionnaire, for me it has quietly become a staple in my makeup collection.  Teint V is a foundation, a serum and a concealer in one. While I don't really use the concealer, the foundation is amazing.  It lasts all day (or all evening) leaving my skin looking younger (that would be the Visionnaire), fresh and perfectly covered (but not caked).  When I wear this I have been complimented on my skin - I am confident that if I wear it my skin looks fantastic.   If I want my skin to look good this is my go to foundation.  It's really as simple as that.

Do you like bronzer?  Even if the answer is no, you need Bourjois Bronzing Primer in your life.  Ignore the  word primer in the title - this is basically a creamy bronze product which is the perfect shade.  The consistency of the product almost mimics the skin in the sun - you know if you're in the sun your skin looks fresh and dewy, powder bronzers can look dry and flat which is the opposite of how naturally sunkissed skin looks - I wore this every day during the summer and while I haven't reached for it so much over the winter I am itching to get my hands on it again.  Bourjois make fantastic products for the face some of which could compete with high end products.

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 - I never thought I would need this cream which is a cure all for skin complaints (think eczema or even nappy rash) but this year it has saved my life on a number of occasions.  A number of times I had random dry skin break outs and Cicaplast fixed me up in 2 days.  I am amazed at not only how effective the cream is but also how quickly it works. It is literally a wonder cream.  I will NEVER be without it.

Wanna see my favourite lip product in my favourite colour?

Ta da its Armani Lip Maestro in the number 500 which is a blush colour.  Hands up who thought I would have picked a slag pink?  There is something about the consistency of this lip product - it's matte but it's not a matte - which makes the lips feel and look fantastic and the shade 500 is a beautiful natural blush colour.  This is my "good" lip product that I wear on special occasions.  I love how naturally pretty it makes the face look.  I am obsessed.

Not one, not two, but three Clarins products make it into our 2013 favourites. The Instant Eye Make-up Remover is the best we've ever tried, removing even the toughest eye make-up in one sweep. It even gets rid of Benefit's They're Real mascara with no bother, which is the real test of any remover. Our only gripe with it is the price - €22 is more than we would usually spend on an eye make up remover - however we're currently testing a budget option that's a possible dupe. Watch this space! Instant Light Lip Perfector is the perfect my-lips-but-better product, offering colour, conditioning and shine all in one tube with a handy sponge applicator. Mags posted about this here. Instant Concealer is a deadly little concealer to have in your stash. It works on under eyes and blemishes, is very pigmented and it doesn't cake. A little goes a long way so this 15 ml tube will last you ages.

BB - for us BB doesn't stand for BB Cream (just the term BB cream grates me), it stands for Breaking Bad.  While I am a bit of a TV fiend (apart from soaps and reality TV I am pretty much open to watching anything) Sile is a little more discerning with her TV time.  When I told her I was watching Breaking Bad she just thought it was another one of my programmes (Mags is watching her stories)  but after one or two episodes she was sucked in staying up all night to get her fix of Walter White and Jessie Pinkman.   It can be funny, heartbreaking and downright disturbing but mostly its really addictive.

Remember I said I didn't watch reality TV ?  I lied just a tiny bit, if there is one programme that sucks me in it's Fat: The Fight of My Life with the delicious trainer Jessie Pavelka.   Most weight loss programmes end with the "fat person" all trussed up and made up, they have to stand and pose uncomfortably.  Not so with Fat: The Fight of My Life this programme focuses on changing the whole mind set of people who literally will be dead if they don't change their ways - their fat is literally killing them.  Instead of being a mean trainer Jessie (I can call him Jessie, we are tight) greets the people with a hug and deals with emotional eating and food addiction.  For him weight loss is almost a side effect of people changing their lives.  At the end of the programme where we follow the person for a year they face a challenge but instead of it being a fashion shoot it's a fitness challenge and there is nothing more inspirational than seeing somebody literally climb a mountain.  I like to record a couple of episodes and binge on them.

I could chat about TV for ages but I should end it there.

I cant wait to see what 2014 has for us.  Bring it on.

Get a Free Sneek Peek of The Body Book by Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz looks like she would be a brilliant friend, she just seems like she would be a great laugh.  I love that she is a complete tomboy, mad about extreme sports and exercise but also has a killer shoe collection and is a major fan of Stila (she loves the lip glazes and convertible colours - but they are amazing, who wouldn't be a Stila fan).  Add to this she was recently on Dr. Oz talking about poop which pretty much makes her golden in my book.

As we all know she is a health and fitness nut (she broke her nose surfing) and she has recently brought out a book called The Body Book.  Myself and Sile were just taking about this the other day saying it's the kinda of book we would be into reading and lucky for us this weekend's The Irish Daily Mail are giving us a sneak peek.

This weekend the Irish Daily Mail have a free 16 page extract from the book.  This is a great idea as I will get to see if I want to buy the book because I get the impression its something I would dip in and out of over time.

I will definitely be picking this up, I can't wait to read health tips from Cameron.

Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Polish in 34 Violine Hynotique

In winter I always gravitate towards dark plum and aubergine shades for my nails and this one, Violine Hypnotique from Bourjois is one of the nicest I've ever tried. Stunning colour that is opaque in just one coat (amazing), it also has one of those great wide brushes that means you literally can coat each nail in one second. This is due on Bourjois stands this month. Definitely recommend!

I do love a bit of Dual Purpose.

I Know I should really be Redser the one twentieth instead of Redser the half from the serious lack of blogs I contribute but since the lovely ladies of Emerald Eyeliner have not voted me off the island (yet) I decided to do another arts & crafty one.
This time I had an idea for a display/ storage pressie (again for our Mags, she is my muse after all).
So I created a nail polish holder for her.  I know you are probably thinking …eh…big whoop, but bear with me.
Instead of just hanging a lovely piece of artwork on your bedroom wall why not use it as storage as well. I do love multipurpose, and although this is no Swiss army knife, its much prettier.
Firstly I started with a trip to the wonder that is Ikea to get a magnetic board . I had this idea a while ago but found the costs of magnetic boards quite expensive, so I was delighted when I stumbled across the Spontan Magnetic Board (available in white or silver) for only €12. Although it was reduced the day i was there.
Then all I needed was some small flat magnets (available from most arts & hobby shops) and a bit of PVA glue and I was sorted.

I started with gluing the magnets to the back of some nail polish bottles- as shown below.

A good glob of PVA glue
A good glob of dry PVA glue, nice & clear
I used PVA glue because it dries to a clear rubber like substances, so you can be generous with your glob. I tried a few other glues/double sided tape and PVA glue seemed to work best. My spare room was an experiential space for a few days. Leave it to dry overnight so it is complete clear and hard.

Then comes the fun bit, the decoration of the board. The options are endless. It can be as simple or ornate as you like.  You could use a poster of your favourite icon/painting. Even wallpaper.
You could use fabric, like the scarf I used below. Pretty much anything once it is not too thick to hinder the magnets. All pretty much changeable if you get bored with the one look.
Magnetic board with my scarf wrapped around

For Mags though I used a Christmas Window Sticker set. I had to use sparkles for Mags. I just trimmed out the festive baubles and used the swirls.Fear not the baubles did not get wasted, they looked lovely & festive on my living room mirror. Sorry I forgot to take a before picture but here is a photo of the packaging so you get the idea.

Ta-dah  the finished board.
Or if you are not feeling especially creative you could just leave the board blank and let the nail polish bottles be the design.

Then its up to you how to arrange your polish bottles…by brand, colour, or just in a way pleasing to your eye. The OCD part of my brain had a field day with this and I may have played with this quite a bit before wrapping it for Mags. Purely quality testing of course.

Swirly whirly
Stand to Attention.

Let me know what you think and if you have any inspiring ideas yourselves.
I do love a bit of Arts & Crafts.
